The Bear Gates are an
entrance to Traquair House near Peebles in Scotland, said to be the earliest
inhabited house in Scotland.
The gates were installed in 1738 by the 5th Earl
of Traquair, after Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) had passed
through the gates in 1745 the gates were closed.
According to tradition they
will not be opened again until the Stuart monarchy is restored.
