Y028 August 1987: Medieval Road to Stone Top in Esholt woods.

Y029 August 1987: Stone Top Farm and barn, situated off Gill Lane adjacent to the railway line, where the Westfield area meets Esholt.

The farmhouse dates back to 1614 when it was built by Thomas Furness, he had to seek permission from the landowners via a land agent.

The Vavasours had arrived with the Normans and were given extensive lands which stretched from the River Wharfe around Askwith to the River Aire in the Esholt area. Furness had their agreement to build Stone Top Farm, it is now called Calverley Close Cottage (April 2013)

This is where we would play before and during the war.
we had a little fire in a crack between two rocks, and roasted acorns.
The Hopwoods lived in the house just by Stone Top railway bridge,
They had only a kerosene lamp in the parlour, that raised or lowered on a cord.

This is Stone Top Farm and barn as it was, it has now been developed and is three properties, behind the main house is the old stone quarry, hence the name,. It is a shame that the old medieval roads around the properties have become over grown.
