Seaside frolics at Bexhill-on- Sea, caught on camera by Ernest Slater.

A charming trio of images show the late Victorian/ Edwardians enjoying their time on the coast, paddling and posing by a rowing boat.

For the more modest there is a bathing machine which allowed the person wishing to swim or immerse themselves in the sea the privacy to change .

The machine would then be hauled into the waves where the occupant could step into the water then back again without exposure to onlookers.

Queen Victoria used one of these machines on the Isle of Wight when staying at Osborne House Her island home.

Seaside fun at Bexhill-on-Sea!

Apart from the bathing huts and fashions in dress nothing changes the pleasure of a day on the beach, these images were taken over a 100 years ago but the paddling, digging in the sand and boats still make a holiday.
