Children at Guiseley National School (St Oswalds) celebrate Empire Day dressed in costumes and with flags.
After the death of Queen Victoria in 1901 it was decided that her birthday 24th May would be marked by a national celebration, the first Empire day was on the 24th May 1902.
Children would salute the flag, sing patriotic songs and be told tales of national heroes who had shaped the British Empire.
By the 1950s the idea of Empire began to decline, the conquering of other lands no longer a matter of celebration, in 1958 Empire Day was renamed Commonwealth Day.
