Issued to Tom Barker of Guiseley, each token was for 6p off a half pound of
butter.
Great Britain had become a member of the European Economic Community or
Common Market in 1973.
Over production of dairy products in Europe led to a
surplus of 152,000 tons of butter which needed to be disposed of.
These
concessionary tokens were issued in Britain but most of the butter was sold to
Russia eventually, a move which cost the EEC millions of pounds. |
