This advertisement was designed for display inside a bus.

email from Chris Youhill, Headingley

The advertisement is a very poignant item from the good old firm - and one or two of we former employees have managed to keep pristine copies of it.

The interesting thing is that the particular coach shown - AEC Reliance with Burlingham "Seagull" body - was taken over by West Yorkshire Road Car Co. Ltd. with the Ledgard business on 15th October 1967, but was not used. It was sold to Tony Edwards, Tony Jewson and Eric Waller - these three men immediately established Independent Coachways of Horsforth, with just that one vehicle initially. I drove it on its very first journey for Independent - an evening private hire to Hebden near Grassington. As is well known locally, Independent soon became a very successful and thriving business until the sad and early demise in 1987 of Tony Edwards, in his forties and after a long and cruel illness.

The business was then bought by Thornes of Bubwith, and now Hemingbrough, and continued at Horsforth for many years before being finally absorbed into the Hemingbrough premises.

Nice to see a post from Chris Youhill and no surprise that he still has Sammy Ledgard memorabilia. I remember Chris well from his days as a Depot Inspector at Leeds City Transport’s Headingley depot ruefully reminiscing that, in a better world, he would have been driving towards Otley, over the Chevin, with the expanse of Wharfedale in front of him.
I have to say thanks to Chris because he was one of the few people at Headingley depot that made working there bearable.

How grand to hear from Kevin after all these years - I "escaped" from Headingley depot on 25th October 1986 and was mighty relieved to do so - although I disagree totally with the Deregulation and complete privatisation of the bus industry it did at least enable me to return happily to my first love of driving right up to normal retiring at 65 in 2001, albeit in the Pontefract/Castleford/Walefield/Selby areas - a region of entirely different cultures and fascination from the Leeds area and interesting for it. I can gladly reciprocate Kevin's kind remarks about me, as he too was one of the relatively few co-operative and "unmilitant" chaps who simply got on with the job and made our difficult work "behind the counter" possible.
