A Field Service postcard sent by John William Slater to his mother Mrs D L Slater of 13 Granville Terrace, Yeadon.
These Field Cards or form letters were issued to the troops to allow them to send basic information to their families, the most vital that the sender was alive.
The cards also made the censors job easier, but to thwart the censors men could arrange a code by using various types of lines or numbers of lines to convey a specific piece of news to the recipient.
