On the November 4th 1984 the Yorkshire Post newspaper chartered a British Airways Boeing 747 G-AWND which was the first Jumbo jet to fly into LBA. It was named "The spirit of Yorkshire" in honour of the day. Next came Wardair 747 C-GXRA, it flew on to Toronto in Canada to become the airport's first direct transatlantic flight.
