The name Batter Lane is unusual. Nothing to do with cricket or frying fish. In my opinion it derives from a construction term, batter means off the perpendicular i.e. sloping which certainly applies to this road.

Mr E. Jackson the headmaster of Rawdon Littlemoor School in 1953 explained to us that the word batter is originally a Scandinavian word from the time of the Danelaw ca. 800+ AD meaning a slope.
