The letters were found in a Methodist Chapel account book
and concern children being of a high enough educational standard to obtain a
Labour Certificate and leave school for work.
The children were expected to be
proficient in the "3 Rs", reading writing and (a)rithmetic.
Two of the letters were sent to Marmaduke
Rennard of 2 Springfield Terrace who was at that time Clerk to the School
Board, he later became the Registrar for Births, Deaths & Marriages for the
